The core function of the rear oxygen sensor
Monitoring the efficiency of three-way catalytic converters
The rear oxygen sensor is installed behind the three-way catalyst to detect the oxygen concentration in the purified exhaust gas and compare it with the data from the front oxygen sensor.
If the two data are close, it indicates that the catalyst may fail and cannot effectively purify harmful substances (such as CO, HC, NOx) in the exhaust gas. At this time, a fault code will be triggered to prompt maintenance.
Assist ECU in optimizing air-fuel ratio
Although the front oxygen sensor is the main basis for adjusting fuel injection quantity, the feedback signal from the rear oxygen sensor can further calibrate the air-fuel ratio, ensuring more complete combustion and reducing emission pollution.
For example, when the rear oxygen sensor detects abnormal oxygen concentration, the ECU may fine tune the fuel injection strategy to compensate for the impact of reduced catalytic converter performance.
Environmental Protection and Fuel Consumption Control
The rear oxygen sensor ensures the normal operation of the three-way catalyst, directly reducing harmful emissions in the exhaust gas and meeting environmental standards. If it fails, it may lead to a 10% -20% increase in fuel consumption and excessive exhaust emissions.
Overview of Working Principle
The rear oxygen sensor is based on the Nernst principle and generates a voltage signal by sensing the difference in oxygen concentration through zirconia ceramic components. Its working temperature needs to reach about 350 ℃ to accurately output data, and the signal is transmitted to the ECU for system adjustment.
Collaboration with other sensors
Difference from front oxygen sensor: The front oxygen sensor directly controls the fuel injection quantity, while the rear oxygen sensor focuses on evaluating the catalytic converter efficiency.
Fault impact: The malfunction of the rear oxygen sensor may not immediately affect power, but if left untreated for a long time, it can damage the catalyst and increase maintenance costs.
