The core function of a car knock sensor
Detect abnormal vibrations (knock) during engine operation, convert mechanical signals into electrical signals, and transmit them to the electronic control unit (ECU) to adjust the ignition advance angle and avoid engine damage caused by knock.
The specific functions and implementation methods are as follows:
Knock detection and signal conversion
Knock sensors are usually installed in the engine cylinder near the combustion chamber (such as between cylinders 2 and 3 of a four cylinder engine), using piezoelectric ceramics or magnetostrictive materials to convert engine vibrations into electrical signals.
This signal is transmitted to the ECU with the "KNK" symbol to help determine if detonation has occurred.
Dynamic adjustment of ignition timing
When detonation is detected, the ECU will immediately delay the ignition time, causing the peak combustion pressure to appear after the top dead center of the piston, reducing the intensity of detonation;
After the detonation disappears, the system will gradually restore the optimal ignition advance angle to improve power efficiency.

Engine protection mechanism
By suppressing detonation caused by low-grade fuel, premature ignition, or abnormal exhaust system, mechanical components such as cylinder walls/piston rings are prevented from being damaged due to abnormal pressure fluctuations.
Technical features:
Piezoelectric ceramic technology: mainstream sensors use piezoelectric ceramic components, and their weak signals require shielded wires to prevent interference;
Resonance type detection: Some sensors resonate with the detonation frequency through a preset vibration frequency (about 6000Hz) to improve detection sensitivity;
Multi parameter feedback: In addition to speed/position, it can also sense changes in mechanical pressure, achieving more precise control.
