The History of the Hyundai Engines
The history of engine development in Hyundai cars can be traced back to 1991. At that time, Hyundai launched its first independently developed engine, the alpha engine, with a displacement of 1.5L and adopting the SOHC (overhead single camshaft) method.
The entry-level alpha engine has a maximum power of 102 horsepower, while the turbocharged alpha engine has a maximum power of 129 horsepower, both of which were the top power outputs at the time.
The new Astra, launched in 1994, used an alpha engine, while the later Elantra adopted the alpha engine DOHC (overhead dual camshaft) method.
The second independently developed engine for modern cars was the beta engine of the 1995 trolley. At that time, Hyundai Motor borrowed the Mitsubishi Sirius engine and began developing a 2L displacement engine independently.
Finally, two engines with 1.8 and 2.0 displacements were successfully developed and equipped for use in Tiburon and Elantra models. The maximum power of the 2L model is 150 horsepower; The 1.8L model has 138 horsepower.
The β 2 engine launched in 2001 was mainly equipped and used in the new Elantra and Tuscany models. The export model is also equipped with a 1.6L engine with 116 horsepower.
After successfully developing the 2.0L engine, Hyundai began to shift its focus to small displacement engines.
In 1997, the first small displacement 0.8L (63 × 64mm) ε engine was launched, which was first equipped on the Hyundai Atoz model. Later, 1.0L (66mm, 58 horsepower) and 1.1 (66mm, 64 horsepower) ε engines were also introduced, but they were not used domestically in Korea.
Precautions for engine installation
1. When loading, please instruct the technician to check whether there are screws or debris falling into the intake and exhaust ports when replacing the intake and exhaust pipes, in order to avoid damaging the valves after starting.
2. Before installation, seal the crankshaft before and after replacement to prevent oil leakage after installation.
3. Do not press the accelerator quickly when starting, first check for any oil or water leakage. Then check if the oil pump is supplying oil normally and if the water temperature is normal before testing again.
